CE8403 Applied Hydraulic Engineering Syllabus:

CE8403 Applied Hydraulic Engineering Syllabus โ€“ Anna University Regulation 2017

OBJECTIVES:

  • To introduce the students to various hydraulic engineering problems like open channel flows and hydraulic machines.
  • At the completion of the course, the student should be able to relate the theory and practice of problems in hydraulic engineering.

UNIT I UNIFORM FLOW

Definition and differences between pipe flow and open channel flow โ€“ Types of Flow โ€“ Properties of open channel โ€“ Velocity distribution in open channel โ€“ Steady uniform flow: Chezy equation, Manning equation โ€“ Best hydraulic sections for uniform flow โ€“ Wide open channel โ€“ Specific energy and specific force โ€“ Critical flow .

UNIT II GRADUALLY VARIED FLOW

Dynamic equations of gradually varied flows โ€“ Types of flow profiles โ€“ Classifications: Computation by Direct step method and Standard step method โ€“ Control section โ€“ Break in Grade โ€“ Computation.

UNIT III RAPIDLY VARIED FLOW

Application of the momentum equation for RVF โ€“ Hydraulic jumps โ€“ Types โ€“ Energy dissipation โ€“ Celerity โ€“ Rapidly varied unsteady flows (positive and negative surges)

UNIT IV TURBINES

Impact of Jet on flat, curved plates, Stationary and Moving โ€“Classification of Turbines โ€“ Pelton wheel โ€“ Francis turbine โ€“ Kaplan turbine โ€“ Specific speed โ€“ Characteristic Curves of Turbines๏ฟพDraft tube and cavitation.

UNIT V PUMPS

Classification of Pumps โ€“ Centrifugal pumps โ€“ Work done โ€“ Minimum speed to start the pump โ€“ NPSH โ€“ Multistage pumps โ€“ Characteristics curve โ€“ Reciprocating pumps โ€“ Negative slip โ€“ Indicator diagrams and its variations โ€“ Air vessels โ€“ Savings in work done.
