PA4201 Plastics Testing Syllabus:

PA4201 Plastics Testing Syllabus – Anna University PG Syllabus Regulation 2021

OBJECTIVES:

 Develop the knowledge of National & International standards for testing methods
 Enable the students to identify and compare the properties of different plastics materials.
 Enable the students to learn about the evaluation of thermal, electrical, optical and mechanical properties of plastics materials.
 To enable the students to learn about the property of the plastic material for several
 Create knowledge about testing of plastics products as per the standards

UNIT I STANDARDS AND SPECIFICATIONS

Concepts of Testing & Identification of Plastics Basic concepts of testing-Specification and Standards– National and International Standards–Test specimen preparation–Pre-conditioning and test atmosphere. Identification of plastics by simple test: Visual examination – Density – Melting point – Solubility test – Flame test – Chemical tests.

UNIT II TESTING FOR MECHANICAL PROPERTIES

Physical Testing Long–term Mechanical Properties: Creep–Stress relaxation. Short-term Mechanical Properties: Tensile properties–Flexural properties–Compressive properties–Shear properties – Impact properties–Tear resistance – Hardness tests–abrasion resistance–Friction test. Gas and Moisture Permeability–Environmental stress cracking resistance–Crazing.

UNIT III TESTING FOR ELECTRICAL AND OPTICAL PROPERTIES

Dielectric Strength–Dielectric Constant and dissipation factor–insulation resistance–volume and surface resistivity – Arc resistance – Antistatic tests. Refractive index–Luminous transmittance – Clarity and Haze – Photo –elastic properties–colour measurements and Specular Gloss.

UNIT IV TESTING FOR THERMAL PROPERTIES

Thermal Properties Melt flow index : Heat deflection temperature – Vicat softening temperature – Marten’s Heat resistance test–Brittleness temperature – Specific Heat – Glass transition temperature – Thermal conductivity–Co-efficient of thermal expansion – Shrinkage – Thermal stability – Flammability.

UNIT V TESTING FOR CHEMICAL AND WEATHER RESISTANCE

Permanence Properties and Product Testing Water absorption: Chemical Resistance – UV resistance–Ozone resistance – weathering resistance – salt spray and straining resistance – Irradiation effects–Microbiological attack. Testing of pipes and fittings–films and sheets – container – Foam–Laminates and FRP based products–Failure Analysis.

TOTAL: 60 PERIODS

OUTCOMES:

Students will be able to
 Identify the plastic materials for some specified applications based on its property
 Assess the plastics materials for their chemical, mechanical, electrical, optical, thermal, and permanence properties as per the standard.
 Understand the basic principle of polymer testing machines.
 Identify the plastic materials by reverse engineering for some specified applications with the knowledge of testing.
 Control the quality of plastics products by testing.
